The concept, if not the plot, is similar to Basu Chatterjee's 1977 film 'Khatta Meetha', about romance between two elderly people and their marriage, which meets with strong disapproval from their children.
Ratna Pathak Shah and Mithun Chakraborty play two lovers, who parted ways because of Shah's villainous rich father. They meet after a gap of 30-years and their love, which could not flourish because of their class divide, starts to blossom again.
Kareena Kapoor, Shah's neighbour cum adopted daughter, comes to know about it and tries to play the matchmaker but the problem is that Shah and Mithun's children don't see eye to eye.
The children are a group of good-for-nothing adults. Shah, in a short but sweet role, has adopted Ajay Devgn and Shreyas Talpade while Mithun, her love from the past, has raised Arshad Warsi, Kunal Khemu and Tuhssar Kapoor.
Shetty has recast Mithun in his disco dancer avatar. The 70s makes a presence in the plot but unlike 'Action Replayy', the era is limited to few scenes with dialogues like 'Prem naam hai mera, Prem Chopra' and 'Jinke ghar sheeshe ke hote hain voh kapde basement me badalatein hain'.
It seems that Shetty is keen to continue the franchise that started with 2006's sleeper hit 'Golmaal', followed by 'Golmaal Returns' in 2008 and now 'Golmaal 3'.
This time too, Shetty manages to make audience laugh with his gags in some of the scenes. He may not be original when it comes to plot and dialogues but he has used fair bit of imagination in setting his story and characters.
He relies heavily on slapstick to get some laughs out of the viewers but the problem with slapstick is that after a time, its predictability starts to irritate and that's what happens to 'Golmaal 3'.
In the second half, film starts to drag and becomes unbearable after a point. After all, who wants to see a don, who has a short term memory loss problem, a spoof of 'Ghajini'.
Devgn has been given a rough and tough look. His character has anger management issues but it is a relief to see him in a light character. Kareena dangle between being cute and being tough. She doesn't have much to do beyond adding glamour to the story.
Kunal's mute character has already acquired a cult following in children and he gets a lot of opportunities to talk in his nonsensical way, which has become so popular with his little audience.
Arshad plays their leader and does a fair job of it. Kunal Khemu, the new addition in the gang, has nothing much to do but talk in jingles and Shreyas is wasted as Devgn's stuttering brother.
The two veterans deliver what is expected of them but you feel sorry for Mithun's character. It is not his age to be beaten to pulp by his own children and suffer a dog bite.
Shetty never intended it to be a classic comedy but has managed well to make people laugh despite the obvious hitches. However, he will need more than gags if he wants to make a 'Golmaal 4'.
