As spot-fixing suspects Salman Butt and Mohammad Aamir leave for Dubai on Friday to appear in the International Cricket Council (ICC) hearing on provisional suspension, chief selector Mohsin Khan said if cleared both by the ICC and the PCB, the selectors will consider the duo for national duty.
“I do hope Salman Butt and Mohammad Aamir will be successful in getting their provisional suspension lifted. And if the ICC removes the suspension we will seek a NOC from the PCB to immediately consider their cases for national selection, Mohsin told Dawn on Thursday. “In the end a decision in the best interest of Pakistan cricket will be taken.”

Salman and Aamir along with their respective lawyers will appear at the ICC hearing scheduled in Dubai on October 30 and 31.

“I can’t go into the details over this issue at this stage; we will only follow the laid-down procedure for the selection of any player, who will also have to get mandatory clearance from the PCB,” he said.

The ICC imposed provisional suspension on three Pakistani cricketers — paceman Mohammad Asif, besides Salman and Aamir — in early September for their alleged involvement in a spot-fixing scam reported by the English tabloid News of the World during the fourth and final Test between Pakistan and England at Lord’s in late August.

While Asif has already deferred his appeal against the suspension to make his case stronger, Salman and Aamir are seeking return to the national team, currently playing against South Africa in the UAE, are eagerly waiting for the hearing.

The ICC may remove the provisional suspension on Salman and Aamir but the game’s world governing body will take a final decision on the issue after the Scotland Yard’s report, which has also been investigating the spot-fixing scam.
